43 years ago today Dr. King was murdered while standing in solidarity with African-American sanitation workers fighting for union rights, equal treatment and dignity. Now more than ever union rights and workplace standards are under attack by politicians and corporate owners who care more about their bottom-line profits and greed than the welfare of their workers. Take some time out today to raise your voice about workers' rights and unions. If you can't make it out to a local protest, pick up your phone and make a quick, simple call to your politicians -- locally or in Washington. And if your city and state are solidly pro-union and sensitive to the needs of labor, reach out and contact some of the politicians in other states like Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio and elsewhere where anti-labor legislation is reaching a fever-pitch. If you can't call, send an email. Let them know that you won't sit by and watch them turn the clock back on labor rights. No effort is ever too small or too insignificant. If you're not sure about what's happening with this issue, take the time to make yourself aware. Learn about the origins of the modern day labor movement and what things were like before pro-worker laws and standards were enforced. This anti-labor insanity affects all of us -- even the younger generation is being targeted by legislation aimed at diminishing child labor laws (like breaking the limit on the amount of hours kids can work in order to lengthen their shift by an extra hour or more). Dare to raise your voice and take a stand, today and every day.
