Indiana Republican's Disgusting Smear of Rape Victims and Women | AlterNet

There are serious crushing waves being generated by republican lawmakers and pro-life zealots from coast-to-coast and it's beyond troubling that it's barely being covered in the mainstream media. It's so important to keep an eye on this fascist shit. They just won't stop trying to take our rights away. Our bodies are our own. Watching this guy's statement is especially stomach-turning for me because of the counseling work I used to do with rape survivors. Linda Lawson, the Democratic representative who answers back, is brilliant and powerful. She echoes some of the realities I saw with the survivors I worked with. How would you explain to a 5 year old why she/he was raped?? How would you explain to an 80 year old great-grandmother why she was raped?? Would you be critical of a prostitute who was raped by her john?? Is it okay to be unsympathetic towards a woman who was raped while she was drunk and walking outside late at night in short-shorts?? Do you believe that some women are "asking for it" and therefore don't deserve to report their rapes??

Rape, sexual assault/molestations are crimes of power.  Doesn't matter if you're that 80 year old great-grandmother or the drunk woman out late in short-shorts...doesn't matter if you're a career prostitute or a 1 year old little girl....doesn't matter if you are a cisgender woman, cisgender man, or transgender woman or transgender man....being forced to have sex against your will is rape. Period.  And if pregnancy results from the assault, women and girls should absolutely have the right to terminate -- but from the tone of what this republican is suggesting maybe he foresees a time where women seeking abortions will have to face being wired to some insane lie-detector machine and face a panel grilling them about their private sex lives and promiscuity.  Unbelievable.

I concur....Rape is rape and there is no justification in the world that would for it. Its funny the more things change the more they stay the same. Misogyny is alive and well and it is incidious...

    Peace and blessings....
